On this date in 1833, the final title for the Arivaca Land Grant was awarded to Tomas and Ignacio Ortiz.
On this date in 1864, Congress made the Arizona Territory a part of the Surveying District of New Mexico, thus providing for surveying operations within Arizona. Surveys were begun at Initial Point, a stone monument placed on a hill on the south side of the Gila River opposite the mouth of the Salt River.
